The first three quarters of 2008 have seen Larry Quick and Ghost Ryder traveling all over the country, and even making a trip abroad. The season has not been without its challenges, but persevering through it has only made Quick Motorsports stronger. Let’s take a look back at where all we’ve been this year!
The year began with Ghost Ryder competing against a stacked lineup for Checkered Flag Productions in Cincinnati, OH. Larry picked up a wheelie contest win and a freestyle victory in the first weekend out. From there it was out to Vegas for the Extreme Monster Truck Nationals at the beautiful South Pointe Casino & Events Center. With Mike Hawkins’ trucks and the Sturges Motorsports team on hand, Larry would have to be on top of his game. The weekend turned out to be an all-out battle between Larry and Mike Hawkins in Equalizer with both trucks taking a turn going upside down. Despite suffering broken ribs on Saturday, that wouldn’t stop Larry from battling to a weekend draw with Hawkins as the two were the only ones to take wins in the donut, wheelie, and freestyle competitions. The third weekend of the month in Toledo, OH would bring another wheelie and freestyle win, while the next weekend in Huntsville, AL would see Larry sweep the weekend’s freestyle competitions.
The month of February began the same way January ended—with a weekend sweep, this time at the Extreme Monster Truck Nationals in Flint, MI. Ghost Ryder would continue running strong on the EMTN tour in Oklahoma City, OK and Alexandria, LA before ending the month with another weekend sweep of freestyle in the Batesville, MS Monster Truck Madness event.
The first weekend of March would bring two wheelie contest wins at the Extreme Monster Truck Nationals event at Oglethorpe Speedway in Savannah, GA. After a weekend off, Larry and Ghost Ryder were off to Lebanon, MO for an Indoor Monster Madness event at the Cowan Civic Center. The Saturday afternoon show would bring a donut contest win and a strong freestyle before the motor let go. This was the sixth engine failure of the year for the Quick Motorsports team, which is testament to the difficulty that the team has faced this year.
Nevertheless, only a week later it was off to Florida for two stops in the month of April for the Extreme Monster Truck Nationals. The first stop was in Ft. Walton Beach and the second in West Palm Beach, bringing several more wheelie and freestyle wins. From there it was off to Laredo, TX which saw the debut of the new white-bodied Ghost Ryder, featuring the name of new friend Stone Cold Steve Austin. The new body was a hit with the fans and Larry drove to wheelie and freestyle wins at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
The month of May would see Quick Motorsports heading up to Vermont to run at one of our biggest sponsors’ events, the Vermonter 4×4 event in Bradford at the Connecticut Valley Fairgrounds. Running against three other trucks, Larry showed no mercy, sweeping the entire weekend’s events.
Quick Motorsports was then invited to participate in a trip to the South American country of Equador for a two-show weekend. The event was originally scheduled for late May, but transportation issues delayed the event to the first weekend of June. Each show would consist of donut, wheelie, and freestyle competitions and Larry swept ‘em all.
Trouble struck in the return home from Quito however, as numerous problems delayed the return of Ghost Ryder to the United States. Originally scheduled to be back in the country in late June, the truck did not end up returning until the first of August! This on top of the motor problems throughout the year is evidence of the trials the team has had to endure in 2008.
But with the truck finally back in the states and the team ready to get back on track, it was off to Woodward, OK’s Crystal Beach Stadium for the MEGA Monster Truck Tour. Back in the saddle, Larry was determined and drove to an impressive second-place finish in racing, narrowly losing to Allen Pezo and Predator in the finals. Freestyle would see Larry finish the show in style with a strong run that came at the expense of more motor problems.
That’s 2008 so far, and while there have been some tough times, Quick Motorsports is ready to finish the year out strong.
